Data Set 2: Medfly Mating Success

چکیده

This is an example of an observational study involving two variables of primary interest and several supplementary variables; these supplementary variables are ones that might affect the response variable and might also be correlated with the explanatory variable. The intent of the statistical analysis therefore is to produce the best possible description of the relationship between the two interesting variables, taking into account possible interactions with or confounding from the other variables. The analysis involves partialand multiple-partial-F tests for interactions and polynomials, and assessment of confounding.

Transcriptome Profiling of Sexual Maturation and Mating in the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, Ceratitis capitata

Sexual maturation and mating in insects are generally accompanied by major physiological and behavioural changes. Many of these changes are related to the need to locate a mate and subsequently, in the case of females, to switch from mate searching to oviposition behaviour. The prodigious reproductive capacity of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata, is one of the factors that has le...

Additional Tests on the Efficacy of Ginger Root Oil in Enhancing the Mating Competitiveness of Sterile Males of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Recent studies have shown that exposure to the aroma of ginger root oil (Zingiber officinale Roscoe; termed GRO hereafter) increases the mating competitiveness of males of the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). This result suggests that pre-release exposure of sterile males to GRO might increase the effectiveness of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) against this ...

Application of Orange Oil to Pre-Release Holding Boxes Increases the Mating Success of Sterile Males of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly in Field Cage Trials (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Previous research showed that exposure to the aroma of orange oil (Citrus sinensis L.) increased the mating success of male Mediterranean fruit flies (medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). This work, however, involved the exposure of small groups of males (n = 25) in small containers (volume 400 ml). In implementing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), several programs use plastic adult reari...

Mating Success of Male Mediterranean Fruit Flies following Exposure to Two Sources of Α -copaene, Manuka Oil and Mango

Recent studies on the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wied.), have demonstrated an increase in male mating competitiveness following exposure to particular plant structures or products, including the fruit and fruit-derived oil of orange trees, the bark and fruits of guava trees, and ginger root oil. Although it is not known which compound(s) was responsible for the enhanc...

Recent Findings on Medfly Sexual Behavior: Implications for Sit

The preceding papers presented in this issue represent some of the activities of a group of researchers working on fruit fly mating behavior as it relates to the use of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). The group was co-ordinated and partially funded by the FAO/IAEA Joint Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, Vienna Austria. A variety of approaches were used to examine lekki...
